Q.1. Give a character-sketch of Hari Singh.
हरि सिंह का एक चरित्र-चित्र दीजिए।
Ans. Introduction-The thief told his last name Hari Singh to Anil. He would do jobs and rob his employers. His Change of Names–He would give himself a new name each month. This kept him safe from the police and his former employers.
His Profession-He took stealing as his profession. He thought himself expert in it. But he could not make theft at the house of Anil because he had given him the key of door.
A Good Reader of Character-He was a good analyst of human character. A greedy man fears, a rich man becomes angry and a poor man shows acceptance to the loss.
Conclusion-In spite of being thief, he realised the importance of learning. So returned with the money and kept it under the mattress.
उत्तर. परिचय – चोर ने अनिल को अपना सरनेम हरि सिंह बताया। वह नौकरी करेगा और अपने नियोक्ताओं को लूटेगा। उनका नाम बदलना – वह हर महीने खुद को एक नया नाम देते थे। इसने उन्हें पुलिस और उनके पूर्व नियोक्ताओं से सुरक्षित रखा।
उनका पेशा-उन्होंने चोरी को अपना पेशा बना लिया। वह खुद को इसमें माहिर समझता था। लेकिन वह अनिल के घर में चोरी नहीं कर सका क्योंकि उसने उसे दरवाजे की चाबी दी थी।
चरित्र का एक अच्छा पाठक- वह मानव चरित्र का एक अच्छा विश्लेषक था। लोभी डरता है, धनवान क्रोधित होता है और निर्धन हानि को स्वीकार करता है।
निष्कर्ष- चोर होते हुए भी उसे विद्या के महत्व का बोध हुआ। इसलिए पैसे लेकर लौटा और गद्दे के नीचे रख दिया।
Q.2. Why did the narrator miss the train and go back to Anil’s room in ‘The Thief’s Story?
“The Thief’s Story’ में कथावाचक ने रेलगाड़ी क्यों छोड़ दी और वापस अनिल के कमरे में क्यों गया?
Ans. Introduction: The narrator of the story is the thief Hari Singh. He stole Anil’s money and wanted to run away with the money.
Missed the train: He reached the station and dashed straight to the platform. The Lucknow Express was just moving out. He should have been able to jump into one of the compartments, but he hesitated. His conscience did not allow him to run away.

Back to Anil’s room: When the train had gone, he had no idea where to spend the night. He thought of Anil. When he discovered the theft, he would not feel the loss of money, but the loss of trust. Hari Singh repented the loss of being a really big man that Anil was preparing him for.
Conclusion: Hari Singh hurried back to the room of Anil feeling very nervous.
भूमिका – कहानी का कथाकार हरि सिंह चोर है। उसने अनिल का धन चुराया और वह धन को लेकर भागना चाहता था।
गाड़ी छोड़ दी—वह स्टेशन पर पहुँचा और दौड़कर सीधे प्लेटफार्म पर गया। लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस अभी चली ही थी। वह कूदकर एक डिब्बे में बैठ सकता था। लेकिन वह झिझका। उसकी आत्मा ने उसको भाग जाने की अनुमति नहीं दी।
अनिल के कमरे पर वापस – जब गाड़ी चली गई, उसके मस्तिष्क में कोई विचार नहीं आया कि रात कहाँ बिताई जाए। उसने अनिल के बारे में सोचा। जब उसको चोरी का पता चलेगा, वह धन के जाने पर अफसोस नहीं करेगा, लेकिन विश्वास खोए जाने पर अफसोस महसूस करेगा। हरि सिंह पछताया कि वह वास्तव में बड़ा आदमी नहीं बन पाएगा, जिसके लिए अनिल उसको तैयार कर रहा था।
उपसंहार — हरि सिंह घबराता हुआ अनिल के कमरे पर वापस जाने के लिए तेजी से दौड़ा।]
Q.3. Who was Anil? What did he do? How did he treat Hari Singh?
अनिल कौन था ? उसने क्या किया? उसने हरि सिंह के साथ कैसा व्यवहार किया?
Ans. Anil was a young man of about 25 years. He did not have proper income. He would write to magazines. So he got random money. He offered Hari Singh, “If you cook, I can feed you.” Although Hari Singh did not know how to cook, he allowed him to stay with him. He taught Hari Singh cooking, writing his name and other words. One day he sold his book to a publisher and returned home with notes. As a habitual of stealing, Hari Singh stole the notes but he had to return because Anil has transformed him. Hari Singh had realised that by learning he could become a rich and big man.
उत्तर. अनिल करीब 25 साल का युवक था। उसकी ठीक से आमदनी नहीं होती थी। वह पत्रिकाओं को लिखता था। तो उसे बेतरतीब पैसा मिला। उन्होंने हरी सिंह को प्रस्ताव दिया, “यदि आप खाना बनाते हैं, तो मैं आपको खिला सकता हूं।” हालाँकि हरि सिंह को खाना बनाना नहीं आता था, फिर भी उन्होंने उसे अपने साथ रहने की अनुमति दे दी। उन्होंने हरि सिंह को खाना बनाना, उनका नाम और अन्य शब्द लिखना सिखाया। एक दिन उसने अपनी किताब एक प्रकाशक को बेच दी और नोट्स लेकर घर लौट आया। चोरी करने के आदी हरि सिंह ने नोट चुराए लेकिन उसे वापस लौटना पड़ा क्योंकि अनिल ने उसे बदल दिया है। हरि सिंह को यह आभास हो गया था कि सीखकर वह एक अमीर और बड़ा आदमी बन सकता है।
Q.4. Why did the thief steal the notes? Where did he go to escape? Why could he not run away?
चोर ने नोट क्यों चुराए? वह बचने के लिए कहां गया? वह क्यों नहीं भाग सका?
Ans.The thief was habitual of stealing. He thought himself expert in stealing. So he stole the notes. He went to the railway station because he wanted to run away by the 10.30 Lucknow Express. But when he reached the platform, the train had left leaving him alone on the deserted platform.
Then he realised his wrong decision. He thought about his deed. He thought that by learning to read and write, he could be a rich and big man. Therefore he could not run away, and returned to Anil again.
उत्तर. चोर को चोरी करने की आदत थी। वह अपने को चोरी करने में माहिर समझता था। इसलिए उसने नोट चुरा लिए। वह रेलवे स्टेशन गया क्योंकि वह 10.30 लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस से भागना चाहता था। लेकिन जब वह प्लेटफॉर्म पर पहुंचा तो ट्रेन उसे सुनसान प्लेटफॉर्म पर अकेला छोड़कर निकल चुकी थी।
तब उन्हें अपने गलत फैसले का एहसास हुआ। उसने अपने कर्म के बारे में सोचा। उसने सोचा कि पढ़ना-लिखना सीखकर वह एक अमीर और बड़ा आदमी बन सकता है। इसलिए वह भाग नहीं सका और फिर अनिल के पास लौट आया।
