Ans. Ausable was a secret agent. He did spinous and dangerous works. Yet he lived so simple life that Fowler, the writer could not believe. He could not believe that such a famous secret agent could live in such a musty and gloomy French hotel. So he was frustrated. Ausable understood it and asked Fowler to cheer up. He was expecting an important report about missiles that evening. Another secret agent had come to rob that report on gun point. But Ausable gave the example of his wisdom and Max had to jump from the window. So he was really a great secret agent.

Ans. The balcony or rather the absence of the balcony is of utmost significance in the story The Midnight Visitor’. Ausable invents the story of a balcony so that Max could be tempted to use it. When there is a knock at the door, Ausable informs Max that the police has arrived to check whether he is safe or not. On hearing this, Max decides to wait on the balcony which as described by Ausable was just below the window, while Ausable sends the police away. So, he jumps from the window; thinking that he will land on the balcony below. But, in reality, there was no balcony and he falls from the sixth floor to the ground below. So, Ausable’s story about the balcony prevents important documents from reaching enemy’s hands.

That man was Max, and another secret agent. Max wanted to rob the report of missiles. But there was a knocking at the door and Max had to run away through window. Since there was no balcony out of the window, so he dropped from the window.

Ans. Ausable has a very intelligent mind. He does not listen Max when he says that he has entered through the main door. Ausable just goes on telling him about the balcony outside the window of his room. He gives him no time to think. He frames the story of the balcony that is nowhere. He changes the tone of his voice accordingly and manages to convince him that there is a balcony attached to the window of his room. Ausable says that somebody entered his room through the balcony earlier and he complained to the management. This is the second time when someone has entered his room. This makes the story convincing.

He pretended to be angry on the managing persons that they did not block the balcony. It was the second time that someone had entered his room through the balcony and window. Max repented if he knew that, he would not use passkey. He believed Ausable. So when he heard knocking, he tried to hide in balcony. But there was no balcony. So he dropped down from the window.
