The Central Idea
The poem depicts the complete dissimilarity between the rich and the impoverished based on unequal distribution of wealth. The poem draws out the attention towards the plight of the needy and the complex dynamics of their existence. It presents the fact that the unequal progress and development between urban and rural areas has become the cause of distress and unhappiness of rural people. The poet wants to say that the prosperity of a nation relies upon a fair distribution of facilities.
कविता में धन के असमान वितरण के आधार पर अमीर और गरीब के बीच पूर्ण असमानता को दर्शाया गया है। कविता गरीबों की दुर्दशा और उनके अस्तित्व की जटिल गतिशीलता की ओर ध्यान आकर्षित करती है। यह इस तथ्य को प्रस्तुत करती है कि शहरी और ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के बीच असमान प्रगति और विकास ग्रामीण लोगों के संकट और नाखुशी का कारण बन गया है। कवि कहना चाहता है कि किसी राष्ट्र की समृद्धि सुविधाओं के उचित वितरण पर निर्भर करती है।
Stanza -1
The little old house was out with a little new shed
In front at the edge of the road where the traffic sped,
A roadside stand that too pathetically pled,
It would not be fair to say for a dole of bread,
But for some of the money, the cash, whose flow supports
The flower of cities from sinking and withering faint.
सड़क के किनारे सामने ही एक छोटा पुराना मकान था जिस पर नया शेड डालकर उसको आगे बढ़ा दिया गया था। सड़क पर बहुत यातायात था। वहीं सड़क पर वाहन रुकने का अड्डा था। वह करुणा के साथ कुछ पैसे के लिए प्रार्थना करता था। यह कहना तो उचित नहीं होगा कि वह यह प्रार्थना भिक्षा के रूप में करता था। यह वही धनराशि है जिसका प्रवाह शहर के सम्भ्रान्त लोगों को चिन्ता में डूबने व मुरझाने से बचाता है।

Out of sorts का अर्थ है ठीक महसूस न करना । जब लोग अपनी कारों से बाहर आते हैं तो वे ऐसा महसूस करते हैं क्योंकि बेकार का शेड पर्वत के दृश्य की सुन्दरता को कम कर देता है। साइनबोर्ड की बेढंगी पेण्टिंग और N व S को गलत ढंग से लिखा जाना उनको ठीक महसूस नहीं कराता है।
