Q.1 Both Derry and Lamb are physically impaired and lonely. It is the responsibility of society to understand and support people with infirmities so that they do not suffer from a sense of alienation. As a responsible citizen, write in about 100 words what would you do to bring about a change in the lives of such people.

Ans. Both Derry and Lamb are physically impaired and lonely. Such type of people also can live their lives with dignity and honour if they have not to confront insensitive attitude of the society. They should not be ridiculed. They must be given respect and honour in the society. These people expect empathy rather than sympathy from others. Some people look upon them with pessimistic approach. They talk to them about their physical impairment. But doing so they revive their wounds. In this condition they may never be able to come out of their sorrow. They will shut the society. They will be forced to go into the world of alienation. As a responsible citizen, it must be our duty to provide them some opportunities to spend of their time in social gatherings. I would personally like to make the people aware as The people should behave normally with physically impaired people. They should not remind them their weakness. The people should not offer their help unless they are asked. They can come into the main stream of the society and live a normal life. In this way, I would help to bring about a change in the life of such people.

Ans. Derry was fourteen years old boy. One side of his face burnt and disfigured by acid. So Derry developed the negative attitude towards life inferiority complex in his mind. He thought that people despited and hated him. One day sneaked into Mr. Lamb’s garden. MR. Lamb was also a physically challenged man. His one leg was blown off in the war. He got a tin leg. Children vexed him calling, “Lamey-lamb”. But he ignored all these things. He developed a positive attitude towards life. He used to welcome people and talked to them happily. He was a person full of life. Derry met Mr. Lamb and spent sometime in his compay. Mr. Lamb advised Derry to keep his ears shut to what was unpleasant to hear. But he should not shut himself in. He told Derry a story of a person who hid himself in his room. A picture fell on his head and he died. He inspired Derry that he should not think of his burnt face. He had all like others. He could do better than others. These encouraging words in this brief association affected Derry. It proved be a turning point in his life.

Q.3 In which section of the play does Mr. Lamb display signs of loneliness and disappointment? What are the ways in which Mr. Lamb tries to overcome these feelings?

Ans. It is towards the end of the first scene that Mr. Lamb display signs of loneliness and disappointment. He wants Derry to stay with him. Derry is intelligent enough to see his loneliness. He bluntly tells him that he was there by himself. That he was miserable and that nobody bothered about him. Mr. Lamb does not want to prolong this conversation is pretends that he had to go the bees. Derry calls him daft and crazy but instead of being angry he says that it is Derry’s excuse of not coming back to him. This idea in further confirmed when Derry has gone to his mother. Mr. Lamb says to himself that everybody is promises to come back to him but nobody does. His ways is overcoming these feelings are to read or to look after his garden. He tries to lose himself in his thoughts and in his bees and apples.

Ans. It is the bond of physical disability that unites the old man Mr. Lamb and Derry the small boy. One of Mr. Lamb’s leg was blown off during the war. He was a tin leg. Derry is small boy who has got one side of his face burnt and disfigured by acid. They suffer physically and mentally due to physical impairment. Mr. Lamb has adapted himself according to the circumstances. He does not care for what people call him. He keeps himself busy in picking apples, making jelly, bee rearing and preparing toffee from honey. He is fond of reading brocks, hearing music and observing beautiful things. But due to physical impairment, Derry has developed a negative attitude towards life. He has inferiority complex in his mind. The old man inspires him by saying that he should shut his ears what is unpleasant to hear. He says Derry that he should not think of his burnt face. He has all like others. He can do better than others.

Ans. In the story ‘On the face of it’ we see that both Derry and Lamb are victims of physical impairment. Derry is a fourteen year old boy. His face was burnt and disfigured due to an acid attack. Mr. Lamb is an old man. One of his legs was blown off in the war. He has a tin leg. Both of them are ridiculed with heartless pity. The people’s reactions towards is never normal and human. They are either very cruel or very soft towards them. In both conditions the results are offending. Due to his ugly face, Derry suffers from a sense of inferiority complex. A pessimistic approach is created in him. He tries to shun the society. He likes to be lonely and withdrawn. This pain of loneliness dominants his actual pain. On the other hand, children vex Mr. Lamb by calling him ‘Lamey Lamb’ Mr. Lamb says that it does not hurt him. But I think it does hurt him. Thus the feeling of loneliness is more painful than physical impairment.

Q.6 The actual pain or inconvenience caused by a physical impairment is often much less than the sense of alienation felt by the person with disabilities. What is the kind of behavior that the person expects from others?

Ans. It is indeed true that a physical impaired suffers the pain of isolation than the pain caused by his disability. The society, perhaps unknowingly, causes this sense of alienation. We pity the disabled. We may even make a show of respect for them. But we are not often ready to have them for friends. This is want Derry in the story ‘On The Face of It’ feels. That’s why thinks that he should live in a place where only the people with burnt faces live. He found the people running away from his presence and this gave him immense mental anguish. His chance meeting with Mr. Lamb, a disabled person, restored his confidence. Both of them became good friends. In spite of all Mr. Lamb’s wisdom, Derry was able to see that he was as alienated as Derry himself.
A disabled person needs friends, even more than a normal man does. He expects from the others to be treated on equal footing. It is not so much the kindness as the companionship that a disabled person needs.
